The New Survivalism Pt. 2

Posted by gestroud on Nov 20, 2009 | 74 views | Print | Email

An escape to the woods isn’t feasible for many. Even worse, our large urban populations would be unable to sustain themselves for long living off the land.

How to Survive Anywhere: A Guide for Urban, Suburban, Rural, And Wilderness EnvironmentsSome survivalists would rather not see it come to that. Instead, by reducing our dependence on energy consuming industries and environmentally destructive farming practices, they advocate a sustainable lifestyle using minimal natural resources.

Laurie Varga is also an urban survivalist. But instead of focusing on wilderness survival, she’s developing skills to live a sustainable lifestyle that could withstand shocks and natural disasters, or even better, prevent them from happening in the first place.

Her business, Anatomy Communications, is carbon neutral and works exclusively with companies that utilize environmentally-friendly practices.

Varga also believes in the importance of building a community of like-minded survivalists. She started an online “Toronto Survive and Thrive” group that meets often to share knowledge and skills for individual survival.
